Abhyanga: Warm Herbal Oil Massage for Whole-Body Wellness
Abhyanga at Ayurhitam is a 60-minute classical Ayurvedic full-body warm oil massage, available at both our Fremont and Sunnyvale locations. Priced at $150 per session, this therapy is one of the most requested standalone services at our clinic. Unlike a spa massage, Abhyanga is a personalised Ayurvedic bodywork practice designed around your dosha, your current concerns, and the season. The warm medicated oil is chosen to work with your constitution, and the rhythmic strokes are applied in the direction of energy flow through the body.
This version of Abhyanga is offered without Swedana (herbal steam), which makes it a beautiful fit for clients who want the calming and nourishing benefits of the oil massage without the added heat of steam. It is often chosen by clients with heat sensitivity, certain skin concerns, mild Pitta imbalance, or simply on a schedule where a shorter, gentler session works better.
What is Abhyanga?
Abhyanga is a classical Ayurvedic full-body massage using warm medicated herbal oils. The word Abhyanga comes from the Sanskrit roots ‘abhi’ (into) and ‘anga’ (limb), and describes the practice of working warmth and medicine into every part of the body. Abhyanga has been part of daily Ayurvedic self-care for over 3,000 years, and is traditionally used to support Vata balance, healthy circulation, deep relaxation, and radiant skin.
Every Abhyanga session at Ayurhitam is preceded by a short assessment, so the therapist can choose the oil that best matches your dosha. Warm sesame oil is often chosen for Vata (warming, grounding), Chandanadi or Ksheerabala for Pitta (cooling, calming), and light herbal oils for Kapha. Medicated oils like Mahanarayan, Ksheerabala, Dhanwantharam, or Bala oil are selected when specific concerns are being addressed.
How is Abhyanga Done at Ayurhitam?
The session begins with a short assessment and oil selection. The client is welcomed into a warm, quiet therapy room and changes into disposable therapy clothing. Warm oil is applied to the scalp and shoulders first, then the therapist works down through the face, neck, arms, chest, back, abdomen, hips, legs, and feet using specific stroke patterns matched to your dosha.
Marma points along the way receive a few extra seconds of focused attention, so the oil settles into the deeper energy layers. The 60-minute session ends with a short rest, warm water, and post-session guidance. Clients are advised to keep the oil on for a few hours before a warm rinse, drink warm water, eat a Sattvic meal, and rest early on the day of the session.

Featured Questions
Abhyanga is a classical Ayurvedic warm oil massage that is traditionally used to support deep relaxation, healthy circulation, Vata balance, better sleep, skin nourishment, and gentle release of toxins. It is often chosen by Bay Area clients working through chronic stress, whole-body stiffness, poor sleep, and general fatigue.
Abhyanga is the warm oil massage alone (60 minutes, $150). Abhyanga with Swedana adds a 15 to 20 minute herbal steam session immediately after the massage (90 minutes, $175 total). The steam is traditionally used to open the pores and channels so the oil and heat can work together for deeper cleansing. Abhyanga without steam is often chosen by clients who prefer a gentler, cooler session or have heat sensitivity.
A full Abhyanga session at Ayurhitam is 60 minutes, including the massage itself, closing rest, and post-session guidance. The oil selection consultation before the session takes an additional few minutes.
Abhyanga (no steam) at Ayurhitam is $150 per 60-minute session, at both Fremont and Sunnyvale. Package pricing is available for a series of sessions. Please call 510-556-3738 or refer to the Treatments page for current pricing and package options.
Self-Abhyanga is a beautiful daily Ayurvedic practice that can absolutely be done at home using warm sesame or coconut oil. We teach clients the daily self-Abhyanga routine during their consultation. However, a full clinical Abhyanga with medicated oils, therapist-led synchronised strokes, and marma point work requires our clinic. Ayurhitam delivers authentic clinical Abhyanga at both Fremont and Sunnyvale.
Abhyanga is generally safe when supervised by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. It is not typically recommended during acute fever, active infection, immediately after a heavy meal, or during the first trimester of pregnancy. Modifications are made for clients with certain skin concerns or oil sensitivities. A consultation confirms your eligibility.
For general wellness, weekly or every-other-week Abhyanga is a beautiful rhythm. For specific concerns like chronic stress, insomnia, or muscle stiffness, more frequent sessions (2 to 3 per week for a short period) may be recommended. Daily self-Abhyanga at home supports the benefits of clinical sessions.
The oil is chosen based on your dosha and current concerns. Common bases include warm sesame oil (warming, ideal for Vata), Chandanadi or Ksheerabala (cooling, ideal for Pitta), and light medicated oils (ideal for Kapha). For targeted concerns, medicated oils like Mahanarayan (joint aches), Ksheerabala (nerve support), Dhanwantharam (musculoskeletal), or Bala (muscle recovery) may be selected.
