Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Oil Massage)

What are Abhyanga and Swedana in Ayurveda?

Abhyanga and Swedana is a dual Ayurvedic therapy that begins with Abhyanga, a method of rhythmic strokes using warm herbal oils that support blood circulation, lymph flow, and the natural regulation of energy through the body. Available at both our Fremont and Sunnyvale locations, Abhyanga stimulates the movement of ama (metabolic toxins) toward the digestive tract and the sweat channels, so they can be released rather than stored. After a relaxing full-body Abhyanga massage, the process of Swedana begins.

Swedana is Ayurvedic herbal steam therapy. It is traditionally used to support blood circulation, open the srotas (channels), soften stiff muscles and joints, and support the natural release of toxins through the skin. The warm herbal steam surrounds the body while the head remains outside the steam chamber, keeping the mind cool and clear as the body opens up. Swedana leaves the body feeling light, supple, and mobile.

This dual therapy of Abhyanga and Swedana is considered the foundation of Ayurvedic bodywork. It is also the required Purva Karma (preparation phase) of a full Panchakarma program. Even as a standalone therapy, Abhyanga and Swedana at Ayurhitam is one of the most requested sessions by Bay Area clients working through stress, muscle stiffness, poor sleep, dull skin, and low energy.

Abhyanga is far more than a spa massage. Each stroke is chosen based on your dosha (Vata, Pitta, or Kapha), the direction of energy flow, and the specific concerns identified during your consultation. The oil, the pressure, the sequence, and the timing are all personalised, which is why Abhyanga at Ayurhitam gives noticeably deeper results than a generic full-body massage.

How is Abhyanga's treatment at Ayurhitam done?

Ayurhitam is the best choice for Abhyanga because we have certified massage therapists trained in classical Ayurvedic bodywork, not just spa massage. A suitable Ayurvedic oil is chosen so it can be well absorbed into your skin, and the entire body is massaged in a specific rhythm and direction. Oils chosen for Abhyanga are based on your individual dosha imbalances, your current life influences (work stress, sleep, digestion), and the current season.

The Abhyanga session begins with a gentle scalp and shoulder application, then moves down through the face, neck, arms, chest, back, abdomen, hips, legs, and feet. Two therapists work in synchrony where appropriate, so both sides of the body receive equal attention at the same time (Sarvanga Abhyanga). Marma points along the way receive a few extra seconds of focused attention, so the oil settles into the deeper energy layers. A full Abhyanga takes 45 to 60 minutes.

Commonly used Abhyanga oils include sesame oil (warming, ideal for Vata), coconut oil (cooling, ideal for Pitta), and mustard-based oils (light, ideal for Kapha). Where specific concerns need targeted support, we use medicated Ayurvedic oils such as Mahanarayan oil for joint aches, Ksheerabala oil for nervous system support, or Bala oil for muscle recovery.

After a strong and vigorous full-body massage over the neck and down to the feet, we bring in the Swedana session using a specialised device called the Steamy Wonder.

How is Swedana done at Ayurhitam?

After a relaxing Abhyanga massage, Swedana is performed immediately, so the oil and heat can work together. Warm herbal steam is delivered all over the body, except for the head, using the Steamy Wonder device. We use a fermented herbal solution that is passed through the body continuously through the specialised device, and our qualified Ayurvedic practitioner supports the flow with gentle circular hand movements. Swedana is traditionally used to support relief from obesity-related concerns and to soothe muscular pain.

The steam session lasts 15 to 20 minutes and is calibrated to your comfort. The chest and face are kept free of steam, and warm water is offered throughout. As the pores open, the body naturally releases sweat, which is one of the classical Ayurvedic pathways for toxin elimination. Swedana leaves the body feeling light, warm, and settled.

Together, Abhyanga and Swedana work in sequence: Abhyanga softens the tissues and mobilises toxins, Swedana opens the channels and encourages elimination. The pairing is what makes this therapy so much more effective than either therapy alone. Every step is supervised by a certified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Why is Ayurhitam the best choice for Abhyanga and Swedana?

At Ayurhitam, we first listen carefully to your concerns and then decide the best therapy approach for you, based on the pulse and dosha assessment. The team at Ayurhitam includes certified massage therapists and certified Ayurvedic practitioners who design the appropriate therapy for you rather than delivering a fixed template.

Our team of practitioners is recognised for providing considered, personalised Ayurvedic solutions, which is why Ayurhitam is often called one of the best Abhyanga and Swedana centres in the US. Sessions are delivered in clean, private therapy rooms at both our Fremont clinic (43255 Mission Blvd, Suite 100) and our Sunnyvale clinic (170 N Wolfe Rd), with dedicated Swedana equipment (Steamy Wonder), warm medicated oils sourced as per Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia standards, and end-to-end post-session guidance.

Clients come to Ayurhitam for Abhyanga and Swedana from across the Bay Area, including Fremont, San Jose, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Milpitas, Union City, Hayward, and Newark.

What to Expect After an Abhyanga and Swedana Session

Most clients feel deeply relaxed and pleasantly warm for the rest of the day after Abhyanga and Swedana. Rest in a quiet space for 30 to 60 minutes after the session, hydrate with warm water, eat a warm Sattvic meal, and avoid cold food, air conditioning, screens, and cold showers for the rest of the day. Deep, restful sleep on the night of the session is very common. Regular Abhyanga and Swedana sessions, once a week or every two weeks, build cumulative benefits that support long-term wellness.

Featured Questions

What are Abhyanga and Swedana used for?

Abhyanga and Swedana are traditionally used to support relief from muscle stiffness, joint aches, chronic stress, sluggish digestion, and low energy. This dual Ayurvedic therapy is often chosen by Bay Area professionals working through burnout, poor sleep, and general fatigue, as well as by those preparing for a full Panchakarma detox program. Abhyanga and Swedana together support circulation, natural detoxification, immunity, and healthier skin.

What happens during the therapy?

Abhyanga is a full-body warm herbal oil massage applied with rhythmic, dosha-specific strokes for 45 to 60 minutes. Swedana follows immediately, where warm herbal steam is delivered through the Steamy Wonder device to open the pores, soften tissues, and support the natural release of toxins. The full session, including preparation and closing rest, takes 90 to 120 minutes and is supervised by a certified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Can Abhyanga and Swedana help with body pain and stiffness?

Yes, the combination of warm oil massage and herbal steam is one of the most established Ayurvedic approaches for muscle stiffness, joint aches, and Vata-related tension. Abhyanga softens the tissues and supports circulation, and Swedana opens the channels so the body can release accumulated stiffness. Many clients report noticeable relief from lower back tightness, shoulder stiffness, and general body pain after a series of 5 to 7 sessions.

How often should Abhyanga and Swedana be done?

For regular maintenance and general wellness, weekly or every-other-week Abhyanga and Swedana sessions are recommended. For specific concerns like chronic stress, insomnia, muscle stiffness, or Panchakarma preparation, more frequent sessions (such as 3 to 4 sessions a week for a short period) may be planned by your Ayurvedic practitioner. Seasonal transitions (spring and autumn) are especially beneficial times for these therapies.

Does Abhyanga improve skin health?

Yes, the warm medicated herbal oils used in Abhyanga nourish the skin from the outside in. Regular sessions leave the skin softer, more hydrated, and naturally glowing. Abhyanga also supports the natural elimination of ama (toxins) from beneath the skin, which is traditionally linked in Ayurveda to clearer, healthier complexion and slower age-related dullness.

How much do Abhyanga and Swedana cost at Ayurhitam?

Abhyanga and Swedana are offered at Ayurhitam at $175 per 90-minute session, at both Fremont and Sunnyvale, with package pricing available for a series of sessions. The exact cost depends on the type of oil selected during your assessment, session duration, and whether the therapy is delivered by one or two therapists (Sarvanga Abhyanga). Please refer to the current Treatments Price page or call 510-556-3738 for latest pricing.

Can Abhyanga be done at home?

Self-Abhyanga is a beautiful daily Ayurvedic practice that can be done at home using warm sesame or coconut oil, and we teach clients how during their consultation. However, a full clinical Abhyanga and Swedana session with medicated oils, therapist-led synchronised strokes, marma point work, and Steamy Wonder-based Swedana requires our clinic space. Ayurhitam delivers full Abhyanga and Swedana on-site at Fremont and Sunnyvale.

Are Abhyanga and Swedana safe during pregnancy?

Modified Abhyanga can be delivered during pregnancy in the second trimester with the guidance of a certified Ayurvedic practitioner. Swedana is generally avoided during pregnancy because deep heat is not recommended. Please consult our practitioner if you are pregnant and looking for gentle Ayurvedic support during this time.

Are Abhyanga and Swedana part of Panchakarma?

Yes. Abhyanga and Swedana together form the Purva Karma (preparation phase) of a full Panchakarma detox program. They soften the tissues and open the channels so the main Panchakarma cleansing procedures (Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya) can work effectively. Abhyanga and Swedana can also be received as a standalone therapy for general wellness.

How long is a full Abhyanga and Swedana session?

A full Abhyanga and Swedana session at Ayurhitam takes 90 to 120 minutes, including the pre-session consultation, oil massage (45 to 60 minutes), herbal steam (15 to 20 minutes), rinse, and closing rest. Please plan a quiet, unhurried afternoon or evening after your session for the best results.
