Your First Ayurvedic Consultation at Ayurhitam
Your initial Ayurvedic consultation at Ayurhitam is a 60 to 90 minute deep-dive into who you are, how your body has arrived at its current state, and what your personalised roadmap to balance looks like. Priced at $250, this is not a 10-minute clinical intake. It is the time our certified Ayurvedic practitioners need to understand you, not just your symptoms, and to design a protocol that fits your body rather than a generic one that fits your diagnosis. Available at both our Fremont and Sunnyvale locations.
If you are considering Ayurveda for the first time, you might be wondering what actually happens in an Ayurvedic consultation. Unlike a typical clinical visit that focuses on the immediate symptom, an initial consultation at Ayurhitam is a deep, unhurried process designed to understand you as a whole person. This page walks you through exactly what to expect, why the process takes the time it does, and what you will leave with at the end of your session.
How Long Does an Ayurvedic Consultation Take?
Your initial consultation at Ayurhitam runs 60 to 90 minutes. This is not padding. It is the time our practitioners need to look closely at your past diet and lifestyle, understand your current state, and trace what actually led to your current imbalance. Ayurveda does not address conditions in isolation. It works with the person the condition is happening to, and that requires time.
Please plan for a full 90-minute window at the clinic. Some clients complete their assessment in 60 minutes, while more complex histories or multiple concerns may need the full 90. The consultation is unhurried by design, so you never feel rushed through the process.
We Think Like Detectives, Not Just Practitioners
One of the things that sets an Ayurvedic consultation apart is the mindset behind it. Two clients can walk in with the exact same concern (say, digestive discomfort, chronic fatigue, or sleep issues) and walk out with completely different protocols. Why? Because the root cause behind the same symptom can be entirely different from person to person.
At Ayurhitam, we consider ourselves detectives as much as practitioners. Our job is not to match your symptom to a standard treatment. It is to investigate the underlying causative factor unique to you, so the care you receive actually addresses what is happening in your body, not just what it looks like on the surface. This detective approach is what allows Ayurveda to work with concerns that have persisted despite many other efforts.
Building Your Personal Pathophysiology: Understanding the Root, Not Just the Symptom
During your consultation, we work with you to trace the pathophysiology of your imbalance. This means we identify where in the body the imbalance actually began and how it progressed to where you are now. Once this roadmap is clear, we explain it to you in detail, so you understand your own body’s story.
This step matters because it reflects our core philosophy: we are taking care of you, not the condition. Understanding your personal roadmap is what allows us to design a protocol that fits your body, not a generic one that fits your diagnosis. It is also what allows you to become an informed participant in your own care rather than a passive recipient of instructions.
Mind, Body, Soul, and Senses: A Whole-Person Approach
Ayurveda teaches that a person is a combination of mind, body, soul, and senses. This means physical symptoms are rarely the whole story. During your consultation, we explore both the physical and mental/emotional contributors to your discomfort, because true wellness requires understanding all the reasons behind an imbalance, not just the ones that are easiest to see.
This whole-person approach is why an Ayurvedic consultation often surfaces connections that clients had not seen before, such as the link between chronic sleep concerns and a long-standing pattern of overwork, or between digestive discomfort and unresolved emotional stress, or between chronic stiffness and years of low-grade Vata aggravation from cold food and irregular routines.
What the Physical Examination Includes
To arrive at an accurate Ayurvedic assessment, our practitioners perform a hands-on evaluation based on classical Ayurvedic frameworks. Your assessment includes the following ten classical parameters (Dasha Vidha Pariksha):
- Prakriti: Your inherent constitution, established at birth.
- Vikriti: The current state of imbalance relative to your constitution.
- Sara: The quality and strength of your bodily tissues (dhatus).
- Samhanana: Your body’s compactness and structural integrity.
- Pramana: Measurements of the body, including proportion and build.
- Satmya: Your level of adaptability to different foods, climates, and circumstances.
- Satva: Your mental and psychological strength.
- Ahara Shakti: Your digestive capacity, including appetite and ability to process food.
- Vyayama Shakti: Your physical capacity for exercise and exertion.
- Vaya: Your age and stage of life, which influences dosha patterns.
Alongside this classical framework, our hands-on assessment includes:
- Pulse (Nadi) examination
- Tongue examination
- Abdominal examination
- Skin complexion assessment
- Checking for dryness or roughness of the skin
- Evaluating any joint tenderness
- A detailed discussion of your digestion and related patterns
Together with your history, these findings help us form a comprehensive Ayurvedic assessment, which becomes the foundation of your protocol.
Your Protocol: Designed the Same Day
Once your roadmap and assessment are clear, we do not send you away to wait for a follow-up appointment. Your protocol is designed immediately, during your consultation. Your same-day protocol typically includes:
- Diet: Specific dietary recommendations tailored to your dosha, current concerns, and lifestyle realities.
- Lifestyle: Practical adjustments to your daily and seasonal rhythms based on classical Dinacharya and Ritucharya principles.
- Herbal support: Specific Ayurvedic herbal formulations chosen for your dosha and concerns.
- Therapies, where appropriate: Recommendations for classical Ayurvedic therapies (Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Panchakarma, or others) that would support your goals.
You leave the consultation with your written protocol, your practitioner’s phone contact for questions, and a clear picture of your next steps.
Why Follow-Ups Matter: Wellness is a Dynamic Process
Once your protocol begins, your body will start to respond, and that response is part of a dynamic, evolving process. Signs and patterns may shift as your body recalibrates, which is exactly why follow-up visits are so important. Ayurvedic care is not a one-time fix; it is a relationship that adjusts as your body changes.
Follow-up consultations are typically scheduled 4 to 6 weeks after your initial assessment, then monthly or bi-monthly as needed. Follow-up sessions are shorter than the initial and priced accordingly. Your practitioner will guide the follow-up cadence based on your specific concerns and how your body is responding to the protocol.
Our Ultimate Goal: Helping You Become Your Own Best Practitioner
Everything we do at Ayurhitam is oriented toward one outcome: giving you the information and understanding you need to take charge of your own health. We want you to leave equipped to care for yourself, not dependent on us or on anyone else to stay well.
This is why we explain the reasoning behind every recommendation, teach you the principles behind your protocol, and help you understand your body’s patterns. Over time, you develop the self-knowledge to recognise the early signs of imbalance and respond with the right food, rhythm, and self-care before things escalate. This is the classical Ayurvedic vision of wellness: an informed, self-aware person living in rhythm with their nature.
What is Included in the Consultation Fee
To keep everything transparent, here is exactly what the $250 initial consultation fee covers, and what is separate:
- Included: The full 60 to 90 minute assessment, physical examination, pulse and dosha analysis, root-cause mapping, and your same-day personalised protocol (diet, lifestyle, herbal, and therapy recommendations).
- Not included: The cost of any herbs recommended as part of your protocol. Herbs can be purchased through Ayurhitam at an additional cost, or sourced elsewhere if you prefer to acquire them independently.
- Follow-up sessions and therapies: Priced separately based on the service. Your practitioner will explain the expected costs of your protocol during your consultation so you can plan accordingly.

Featured Questions
An Ayurvedic consultation at Ayurhitam is a 60 to 90 minute session that includes a detailed conversation about your health history, diet, lifestyle, and current concerns, followed by a hands-on physical examination using the classical Dasha Vidha Pariksha (ten-fold assessment). Your practitioner then traces the root cause of your imbalance, explains your personal pathophysiology, and designs a same-day protocol including diet, lifestyle, herbs, and any recommended therapies.
Your initial Ayurvedic consultation at Ayurhitam is 60 to 90 minutes. This is significantly longer than a typical clinical visit because Ayurveda works with the whole person, not just the symptom. Please plan for a full 90-minute window at the clinic. Some clients finish in 60 minutes; others need the full 90 depending on the complexity of their history.
The initial Ayurvedic consultation at Ayurhitam is $250 for the full 60 to 90 minute session. This includes the assessment, physical examination, pulse and dosha analysis, root-cause mapping, and your same-day personalised protocol. Herbs recommended as part of your protocol are priced separately. Please call 510-556-3738 for current pricing.
Please bring a list of your current medications and supplements, any recent lab results or medical reports that are relevant, and a brief summary of your health history if available. Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to your wrists (for pulse examination), tongue, and abdomen. If you have specific concerns you want to focus on, jot them down beforehand so we can be sure to cover everything.
Yes, the 60 to 90 minute initial consultation is the same detailed assessment that clients complete before enrolling in the AyurRhythm 90-day program. The $250 initial consultation fee is separate from the AyurRhythm program pricing ($1,499). If you decide to enrol in AyurRhythm after your initial consultation, your practitioner uses the assessment data to design your personalised 90-day plan.

Most clients follow their initial consultation with a follow-up 4 to 6 weeks later, then continue with monthly or bi-monthly follow-ups depending on their concerns and how their body is responding to the protocol. Chronic concerns may need more frequent early check-ins. Stable maintenance often needs only quarterly consultations. Your practitioner will guide the exact cadence for you.
The initial consultation is best done in person because it includes a hands-on physical examination (pulse, tongue, abdominal, skin, and joint assessment) that cannot be replicated over video. Follow-up consultations and quick check-ins can often be done virtually once your initial in-person assessment is complete. Please call 510-556-3738 to discuss the format that best suits your situation.
Yes. Many clients book an initial consultation for preventive Ayurvedic guidance, seasonal alignment, or simply to understand their Prakriti (constitution) and receive a personalised diet and lifestyle roadmap. Ayurveda is as much about maintaining wellness as it is about addressing concerns. A preventive consultation is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your long-term health.
