Manya Basti: Ayurvedic Oil-Retention Therapy for the Neck

Manya Basti at Ayurhitam is a 45-minute classical Ayurvedic therapy for the neck and cervical region. Priced at $150 per session, this therapy uses the same oil-pooling principle as Kati Basti and Janu Basti, but focused precisely on the cervical spine. A dam of herbal dough is built around the neck, and warm medicated oil is retained inside it for 40 minutes, working on the cervical vertebrae, the deep neck muscles, and the marma points of the region.

Manya Basti is one of the most requested Ayurvedic therapies at our clinic among Bay Area professionals who spend long hours at desks, on phones, and behind screens. In Ayurveda, chronic neck pain is traced back to Vata imbalance settling in the cervical region, often aggravated by cold air, poor sleep posture, and screen-forward head position. Manya Basti is designed to bring warmth, medicine, and Vata pacification directly to the neck.

Manya Basti

What is Manya Basti?

The word Manya means “neck” in Sanskrit, and Basti means “to hold” or “to retain.” Combined, Manya Basti means holding warm medicated oil on the cervical region for a period long enough for the deeper tissues to absorb the medicine. In classical Ayurvedic texts, the neck is considered a critical channel between the head and the body, and any imbalance in this region can affect the head, arms, chest, and mind.

Ayurvedic texts describe the cervical region as home to several important marma points (Krikatika, Vidhura, Nila) and as a Vata-dominant seat. When Vata increases here, it shows up as stiffness, cracking sounds, radiating tension to the arms, tension headaches, and reduced range of motion. Manya Basti is the classical Ayurvedic response.

How is Manya Basti Done at Ayurhitam?

The client lies face down on the therapy table with a comfortable support for the forehead. A ring of dough made from organic black gram flour is placed around the neck and upper shoulders, sealed carefully at the base. Warm medicated oil (Mahanarayan, Ksheerabala, or Dhanwantharam, chosen for your dosha) is poured into the dam and retained for 40 minutes. The oil temperature is monitored and topped up as needed.

After the oil retention, the dam is carefully removed, and a short neck massage is performed to work the oil into the surrounding tissues. A gentle warm compress may follow. Clients are advised to keep the warmth, avoid cold air (especially air conditioning directly on the neck), drink warm water, and rest. Deep easing of neck tension is typically felt within the first hour after the session.

Featured Questions

What is Manya Basti used for?

Manya Basti is a classical Ayurvedic oil-retention therapy for the neck, traditionally used to support relief from cervical stiffness, chronic neck pain, tension headaches, and Vata-driven neck concerns. It is often chosen by Bay Area professionals working through text-neck, cervical spondylosis, and screen-related neck tension.

How is Manya Basti done?

A ring of black gram flour dough is placed around the neck, sealed to hold liquid. Warm medicated oil is poured into the dam and retained for 40 minutes, working on the cervical spine, deep neck muscles, and marma points. The dam is then removed and a short neck massage follows. The entire 45-minute session is supervised by a certified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Can Manya Basti be done at home?

Manya Basti cannot be done authentically at home. The dam construction, oil temperature control, and safe positioning all require trained supervision. Home neck-oil practices with a small amount of warm sesame oil can be taught as daily self-care between sessions.

How much does Manya Basti cost at Ayurhitam?

Manya Basti is $150 per 45-minute session. Package pricing is available for a series (typically 5 to 7 sessions for chronic concerns). Please call 510-556-3738 for current pricing.

Can Manya Basti help with cervical spondylosis?

Yes, Manya Basti is one of the classical Ayurvedic therapies for cervical spondylosis. Regular sessions are traditionally used to support relief from stiffness, ease radiating discomfort, and improve range of motion. It is a supportive Ayurvedic therapy and works best alongside medical evaluation of the underlying cervical concern.

How many Manya Basti sessions are needed for results?

Most clients notice easing of neck tension after 3 to 5 sessions delivered on consecutive or alternate days. For chronic cervical concerns, a series of 5 to 7 sessions followed by monthly maintenance is typically recommended.

Is Manya Basti safe for everyone?

Manya Basti is generally safe when supervised by a certified practitioner. It is not recommended during pregnancy, in cases of acute cervical injury, open skin injuries around the neck, uncontrolled blood pressure, or active fever. A consultation confirms your eligibility.

Can Manya Basti help with text-neck from long screen hours?

Yes, Manya Basti is beautifully suited for text-neck and screen-related neck tension. The warm oil is traditionally used to release deep cervical muscle tension and support easier posture. Monthly maintenance sessions alongside daily neck-supportive practices (posture, ergonomics, gentle stretching) are often recommended for Bay Area tech professionals.
