Nasya: Traditional Ayurvedic Nasal Care for Sinus, Head and Mind

Nasya at Ayurhitam is a 60-minute classical Ayurvedic therapy in which medicated oils are gently administered through the nostrils to clear, nourish, and rebalance the head, sinuses, and cervical region. Priced at $100 per session, this therapy is one of the most versatile classical Ayurvedic practices, traditionally used for concerns ranging from chronic sinusitis to migraines, hair fall, and mental fatigue.

Nasya is one of the five classical procedures of Panchakarma (the other four being Vamana, Virechana, Basti, and Raktamokshana), and it can also be offered as a standalone therapy. In Ayurvedic classical texts, the nose is described as the doorway to the head (“Nasa Hi Shirasah Dwaram”), and Nasya is therefore considered the primary Ayurvedic therapy for concerns above the shoulders.

Nasya

What is Nasya?

Nasya (or Nasya Karma) is a classical Ayurvedic Panchakarma procedure described in the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam. Medicated oils, ghee, or herbal decoctions are administered through the nostrils in specific doses and rhythms. The medicine travels through the nasal passages and reaches the sinuses, the head channels (srotas), and the cervical region, working on any imbalance that has settled in the upper body.

There are several types of Nasya described in the classical texts, including Marsha (higher-dose therapeutic Nasya), Pratimarsha (daily maintenance Nasya, gentle), Navana (main Panchakarma-style Nasya), and Shirovirechana (cleansing Nasya). The type chosen for your session depends on your concern, dosha, and current state.

How is Nasya Done at Ayurhitam?

The session begins with a short assessment and the choice of the specific medicated oil or ghee for your Nasya. The client lies face-up on the therapy table with the head slightly tilted back. Preparation begins with a gentle warm oil massage of the face, forehead, and neck to open the head channels, followed by a short herbal steam to further prepare the sinuses.

Warm medicated oil (Anu Taila, Shadbindu Taila, or a personalised blend) is then gently administered through each nostril in the specific classical dose. The client is asked to breathe gently, then to spit out any medicine that reaches the throat. A short massage of the throat, neck, and shoulders follows to work the medicine down through the channels. The session ends with rest, warm water, and post-session guidance. Clients are advised to avoid cold air, cold food, and dust exposure for the rest of the day.

Featured Questions

What is Nasya used for?

Nasya is a classical Ayurvedic nasal therapy traditionally used to support relief from chronic sinusitis, migraines, tension headaches, seasonal allergies, hair fall, and mental fatigue. It is often chosen by Bay Area clients working through screen-related mental fog, chronic sinus concerns, migraines, and cervical tension.

How is Nasya done?

The session begins with a warm face massage and short herbal steam to open the head channels. Warm medicated oil is then gently administered through each nostril in specific classical doses. A short throat and shoulder massage follows. The full 60-minute session is supervised by a certified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Can Nasya be done at home?

Daily home Nasya (Pratimarsha Nasya) with a small amount of warm sesame oil or Anu Taila is a beautiful classical Ayurvedic self-care practice, and we teach clients how during their consultation. A full clinical Nasya with therapeutic-dose medicated oils, preparation, and marma work is best received at our clinic.

How much does Nasya cost at Ayurhitam?

Nasya is $100 per 60-minute session. Package pricing is available for a series (typically 5 to 7 sessions for chronic sinus concerns). Please call 510-556-3738 for current pricing.

Can Nasya help with chronic sinusitis?

Yes, Nasya is one of the classical Ayurvedic therapies most commonly chosen for chronic sinusitis. The medicated oil administered through the nostrils is traditionally used to clear the sinuses, calm inflammation, and support the natural drainage of accumulated mucus. A series of 5 to 7 Nasya sessions typically brings noticeable relief.

Can Nasya help with migraines?

Yes, Nasya is traditionally used for recurring migraines and tension headaches. In Ayurveda, migraines are often traced back to Pitta or Vata imbalance in the head channels. Nasya delivers the medicine directly to the head channels, supporting the natural rebalancing. Nasya is often combined with Shirodhara for migraine support.

Is Nasya safe during pregnancy?

Nasya is generally avoided during pregnancy. Gentle home Nasya with a very small amount of warm sesame oil may be appropriate under supervision, but clinical Nasya is not recommended during pregnancy. Please consult our certified practitioner for pregnancy-appropriate options.

How often should I get Nasya?

For chronic sinusitis or migraines, a series of 5 to 7 sessions on consecutive or alternate days is typically recommended, followed by seasonal maintenance sessions (especially at the change of seasons). Daily home Nasya (Pratimarsha) can be practised year-round.
