Taila Dhara: Steady Warm Oil Stream for Whole-Body Ease
Taila Dhara at Ayurhitam is a 60-minute classical Ayurvedic therapy in which a steady, warm stream of medicated oil is poured over the body in specific patterns and rhythms. Priced at $175 per session, this therapy is one of the most deeply calming Ayurvedic experiences. Taila means “oil” and Dhara means “continuous stream,” and the therapy combines the nourishment of warm medicated oil with the meditative rhythm of a steady, unbroken flow across the body.
Taila Dhara (also called Sarvanga Dhara when applied to the whole body) is often chosen by clients working through chronic pain, chronic stiffness, restless mind, insomnia, and general Vata-Pitta imbalance. The continuous stream of warm oil calms the nervous system while nourishing the tissues and easing the muscular tension held throughout the body.
What is Taila Dhara?
Taila Dhara is a classical Ayurvedic Snehana (oleation) and Dhara therapy described in traditional Ayurvedic texts. Similar in principle to Shirodhara (which is focused on the forehead), Taila Dhara extends the continuous stream across the whole body or specific regions. The oil is chosen based on your dosha, and the temperature is carefully maintained throughout the session so the stream stays therapeutically warm from start to finish.
The steady rhythm of the oil stream has an unmistakably calming effect on the nervous system. Combined with the medicinal properties of the chosen oil, Taila Dhara is traditionally used to support Vata pacification, deep muscle release, chronic pain support, and mental settling.
How is Taila Dhara Done at Ayurhitam?
The session begins with a short assessment and oil selection. The client lies comfortably on the therapy table. Warm medicated oil is delivered from a specialised dhara vessel or pot in a steady, unbroken stream across the body, following specific classical patterns. The therapist directs the flow with careful hand movements, ensuring even coverage across the shoulders, arms, torso, hips, legs, and feet. The oil is caught, re-warmed, and re-circulated to maintain temperature.
The 40-minute session ends with a short rest, warm water, and gentle wipe-down. Clients are advised to keep the residual oil on for a few hours before a warm rinse, drink warm water, eat a Sattvic meal, and rest early. Deep, restorative sleep is very common on the night of the session.
