Takradhara: Full-Body Medicated Buttermilk Therapy for Deep Cooling
Takradhara at Ayurhitam is a 60-minute classical Ayurvedic therapy in which a steady stream of medicated buttermilk (Takra) is poured over the body in specific patterns. Priced at $225 per session, this therapy is one of the most cooling and deeply calming Ayurvedic experiences. Takra means “buttermilk” and Dhara means “continuous stream,” and the therapy combines the cooling, Pitta-pacifying quality of medicated buttermilk with the meditative rhythm of a steady flow across the body.
Takradhara is often chosen by clients working through Pitta-driven concerns: chronic headaches, insomnia, eczema, psoriasis, hypertension, hair fall, skin heat, mental restlessness, and burnout. Unlike oil-based Dhara therapies, the buttermilk base is naturally cooling and light, making Takradhara uniquely suited for concerns rooted in heat, inflammation, and Pitta imbalance.
What is Takradhara?
Takradhara is a classical Ayurvedic Dhara therapy described in traditional texts as one of the most cooling therapies for the body and mind. The medicated buttermilk is prepared by churning specific Ayurvedic herbs into fermented buttermilk, creating a therapeutic liquid that carries the properties of both the buttermilk (light, cooling, digestive) and the herbs (dosha-pacifying, calming). The herbs commonly used include Amalaki, Musta, and Chandan, all traditionally used to support Pitta balance.
The steady stream of medicated buttermilk poured across the body is traditionally used to soothe an overheated mind, calm chronic Pitta imbalance in the tissues, and support the natural cooling of the nervous system. Ayurvedic texts describe Takradhara as particularly effective for chronic insomnia, obstinate headaches, hypertension, and skin heat.
How is Takradhara Done at Ayurhitam?
The session begins with a short assessment to confirm the target concerns and the specific herbal blend for the buttermilk. Freshly prepared medicated buttermilk is warmed to a gentle, comfortable temperature. The client lies comfortably on the therapy table. The medicated buttermilk is poured in a steady stream across the body in specific classical patterns for 45 minutes. The stream is caught, re-warmed, and re-circulated to maintain temperature.
The session ends with a short rest, a gentle warm rinse, and post-session guidance. Clients are advised to avoid cold food and drinks, rest in a warm environment, drink warm water, and eat a Sattvic meal. Deep, cooling sleep is common on the night of the session, especially for clients working through Pitta-driven insomnia.

Featured Questions
Takradhara is a classical Ayurvedic medicated buttermilk stream therapy traditionally used to support relief from Pitta-driven concerns: chronic headaches, insomnia, hypertension, hair fall, adult acne, and mental burnout. It is often chosen by Bay Area clients working through chronic stress with a heat quality (racing mind, irritability, restlessness).
Both are Dhara therapies. Shirodhara pours warm medicated oil on the forehead specifically (60 min, $150). Takradhara pours cooling medicated buttermilk across the whole body (60 min, $225). Shirodhara suits Vata-Pitta stress concerns. Takradhara suits more specifically Pitta-heat concerns like burnout, migraines, hypertension, and hair fall.
Takradhara at Ayurhitam is a 60-minute session. Including pre-session assessment and closing rest, please plan for about 90 minutes at the clinic.
Takradhara is $225 per 60-minute session (higher than oil-based Dhara due to the fresh buttermilk preparation). Package pricing is available for a series. Please call 510-556-3738 for current pricing.
Takradhara is generally safe when supervised by a certified therapist. It is not recommended during pregnancy, in cases of dairy allergy or lactose intolerance, active skin infection, acute fever, or Kapha-dominant concerns (where cooling would aggravate). A consultation confirms your eligibility.
For Pitta-driven chronic concerns, a series of 5 to 7 sessions on consecutive or alternate days is typically recommended, followed by monthly maintenance. Especially recommended during warmer months (spring and summer) when Pitta is naturally aggravated.
